Sarah’s INSPIRED Jewellery design Process

For me it’s not enough to simply string together a set of pleasing coloured gemstones - my jewellery is a sculptural landscape in itself! I create ‘wearable art’ pieces, each one unique with each element very carefully thought out right down to the energies of the stones themselves.

Each stunning piece of nature inspired jewellery you see in my shop goes through a lengthy design process - this is no ordinary gemstone jewellery!

Perhaps you’d like to commission a unique jewellery set for an event or a special individual in which case the same process would apply.

Read on below to find out how I craft a scene from nature using gemstones and cotton…

Step 1 - Brainstorm

Every INSPIRED jewellery piece usually begins as a series of sketches and rough notes in a notebook, it’s at this stage that I brainstorm the elements, colour scheme, and potential materials that will best express the subject I’ve decided on. There’s a lot of crossing out and redesigning, and this is also where I can plan how much cord, how many beads and which silver findings I’m likely going to need.

Step 2 - Inspirational art

Up next is the inspirational nature art, though sometimes the painting happens before the piece notes - inspiration is funny that way! Producing a watercolour painting allows me to find and represent the essence of the subject and paves the way to understanding what the abstracted jewellery is portraying.

The image is printed onto a small card which is included in the gift box with every jewellery piece to help set the scene for the lucky recipient.

Step 3 - Materials

Now comes the many hours of online research - tracking down the perfect shaped beads and charms, only genuine .925 Sterling Silver, and just the right shade of cord and stones.

I’m so excited when the deliveries arrive! Sometimes the elements have travelled halfway round the world to become a part of my art…

Step 4 - Creation

With all my materials gathered I can finally get to work arranging the beads and knotting the cords based on my sketched designs. Some elements require more manipulation or crafting and can take several days for a design to finally come together into something wearable.

Step 5 - It’s a wrap!

After a loving polish the pieces are photographed, before being carefully wrapped in felt and gift boxed along with the art card and care instructions.

I then get to share my art with the world where it can be discovered, purchased and appreciated - hopefully as much as I appreciate the subject that inspired the creative process in the first place!

The icing on the cake is that 10% of all my sales go to support an environmental charity related to the subject of the design and to keep the inspiration cycle going for future generations!
